headlight problems

Postby txtimestopper » Tue Oct 12, 2010 5:25 pm

I have an 86 goldwing gl 1200. I have replaced the headlight bulb but and still having the same problem. Sometimes when the bike is turned on the light does not come on. If you push the start button lightly it will come on, and sometimes go back out and sometimes stay on. Any ideas what I may need to replace? Thank you.

I'd have to look at the schematic, but as i recall, low current wiring is routed to the starter switch, then to the dimmer switch, then to the relay that operates the light.A bad connection in the starter switch will kill volts to the dimmer and so on.I found on an 78 gl1000 the switch lube had dried up .I carefully disassembled it,cleaned and lubed it to fix that same problem.Remember the headlights go off when starting the bike. Also the switch will have at least one spring in it.

I'd start by cleaning the starter switch.

I had that same problem and I unscrewed the the Handlebar assembly cleaned everything up and readjusted it on the handlebars and it solved the problem.

All your trouble is the key switch. You can repair or -the beter way- add a relay.
A relay will alleviate the key switch work and provide 0,5 volts more to the front light (Is a LOT more light).

Amazingly enough, I just finished doing this on my Nighthawk. I was giving it a once over before I had to show it to people and the headlight wouldn't come on.. got the diagram out and chased wires all over. Finally narrowed it down to the start switch, so I disconnected the battery <--(Fairly important step), disassembled the switch housing and sprayed electronics cleaner spray into it. After giving it almost an hour to dry, hooked the battery back up and all was well again.
If a light sleeper sleeps lighter with a light on, does a hard sleeper sleep harder with a hard on?

If the original poster can fix the problem by jiggling the start switch, it is most certainly going to be the source of the problem, not the key switch.
