86 SEi/LTD igniter ?

Post by Rusty Bike » Tue Nov 14, 2017 1:07 pm

OK folks, can anyone tell me the function of the ignition igniters on these fuel injected machines? I believe thay are between the coils and the ICM electrically speaking...thanks.

The spark igniter(s) provide the ground for the coils to spark the plugs in accordance with the timing from the ECU from the inputs to the ECU such as the Ns and Gr/Gl sensors.

The are basically power transistors. They take the small amount of power put out by the CFI computer as pulses and use it to switch higher current 12 volt power to power the coils.

That's what I was starting to think they were by Ernest's discription. . So, they are on the negative side of the coil. Timed electricial impulse from the ECU closes the switch ( transistor) to make the ground that fires the coil. Basicly electronic points. I'm guessing the igniters have 3 leads comming off them. Do I have it right? As you may have guessed, I'm trying to ge this fuel injected SOB to run right. Thanks.
BTW admin, those Marsland driveing lights I got from you are now on the front of my Valkyrie. I put in 55W lamps and run them off a relay. Relay is trigered by the hi/low wires going to the headlight lamp. I used two diodes in a Y configuration to feed the relay triger via a switch. This way the Marslands shut offf when the start button is pushed even if the switch is on. Those are really nice lights...Thanks.

The igniters on our bikes have four wires. Earlier 1100s and 1000s have 5 wires because they have a pick up coil, our bikes do not.

There are spark igniters from Procom for the 1100s and 1000s. From what I have been able to discern is that the fifth wire, blue in colour does not need to be hooked up (have compared 1100 and 1200 wiring diagrams) and these can possibly work on our bikes. Here is a picture of these igniters and only $52.00 USD for a set.

Here is the eBay site:https://www.ebay.ca/itm/162015515482?rmvSB=true

You would have to take the wires out of the 5 wire connector and install in the 4 wire connector for our bikes. If these come down anymore in price would not be a bad buy and try.

Cheers

They are fabulous, aren't they? The even swath of light is all due to the parabolic reflector. They sure don't make lights like that anymore.
