Head gasket leaking oil

Post by JOLLY » Thu Nov 23, 2017 9:17 pm

Can someone please tell me how to find a head gasket R&R video.??? I have a GL1200A that seems to be seeping oil on the right side of the head gasket, at the back in front of the fuel pump side. It leaks down to the exhaust bolt. I have looked at what videos I could find, and can't understand where the oil could be coming from..!!!! My bike runs great, but I don't like oil leaks. I have trouble trying to explain what is going on, in words!! Should I replace the head gasket?/? From the videos there just isn't any oil around that part of the head To be leaking from. Just water ports. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.......... Thanks,JOLLY

When you mention head gasket leaking, do you actually mean the valve cover gasket? If it were a head gasket there would be other issues besides a small oil leak.

Have you checked the coolant tank to see if there is oil in the coolant, check the rad as well. Are you having to put coolant into the coolant tank/rad on a continuous basis? have you done a compression check to verify if it may be a head gasket?

Can you give us a picture of what you are explaining. A little more info is needed.

Just a thought.

Cheers

if it was head gasket the bike wouldnt be running all that well, I suspect it could be two very common leaks one is the valve cover gasket, the other is the cam shaft cover gasket either one a very easy fix

good luck

OK, I do have a oil leak coming from the valve cover. No oil in the water, or radiator. No water in the oil. Need help to put pictures in this posting. I can't understand how oil is where it is at. Maybe the wind is blowing it up there. Going to fix the valve cover oil leak and see if that fixes the problem. My granddaughter said she would help with the picture problem. Have studied the head oil inlets and from what I can tell there is only one port that lets oil into the head, and only one drain port at the bottom of the head. Where my oil is at, it's nowhere near those ports. Hoping it's just the valve cover gasket. I'll let ya'll know what happens. Thanks, JOLLY

I always clean up the area real will with Brake Clean or something that eats oil and grease. Get it CLEAN!! Then start the engine let it Idle (outside or) Watch the whole area you will see a little oil seep...if its leaking. Dont start changing things until your 85% sure where its coming from. If not your just wasting your time and $$. Work smart.
