Does it Exist? A Wiring Diagram For '87 Interstate?

Post by patbrandon1 » Tue Mar 13, 2018 9:19 am

I have looked and looked for a wiring diagram for my GL1200 Interstate ever since I got it June of 2017. I looked all over the net, on here, and even went to one of those places with books on shelves, I think they call it a library.

Last September I found an "Haynes Owners Workshop Manual for Honda Goldwing 1200 1984 thru 1987 1200cc" on Ebay and I bought it.
Really thought I had found the solution. HOWEVER... there are wiring diagrams, but only for 84 Standard, 85 Interstate, 86 Aspencade, and 87 Aspencade. My wiring is different from all of them. :?

So I thought, "Hey, I belong to a site called Godwingdocs, they'll probably be able to direct me to the doc." Well, I have searched a LOT and haven't been able to find one. A kind gentleman offered me his workshop manual in PDF, but it was the same one I already had and didn't contain the doc I need. :(

So I am asking please, please, please, if there is anyone else that owns a 1987 GL1200 INTERSTATE Interstate that has had this problem, or has a wiring schematic for it? I am willing to pay. :!: :?: :!: :?:

I went to the Documents section of this site and was directed to HELMINC site that carries manuals, and both manuals that could possibly contain the wiring diagram I need are out of stock. AND in neither description of them does it say weather or not thay do actually have the diagram I need. And at $48.88 & $39.95 That's quite a chunk of change to take a risk to find out. I have emailed them to ask if the actually have a wiring diagram I need, but have had no reply as of yet.

Through the years I have found it is just much easier to work on anything related to electrical if I have a wiring diagram. On my old 82 1100 Interstate I finally found one that proved very handy. But be aware if you are an 82 1100 Interstate owner, that the schematic I found for an 82 was not the correct schematic for my bike. The 1983 schematic was the one that was correct. Model year changeover?

So if anyone can help me out, I would be very grateful. Thanks for your time. :D

Below are some pictures of my somewhat frustrating journey in my search for the Holy Grail...

This last one is a pic of my fuse box. In the event anyone believes they might have what I need, this is what the wiring diagram should contain in the way of fuses in order to be the correct one.

Have you talked to Helm Inc. about the "out of stock", maybe they are accumulating 'wants' to print again ? You are on the right track. You need the factory manual 1984-1987. It has the wiring diagrams for all models. There is also a supplemental electrical manual (not particular to the '87). Page you need from the manual is 19-14, the page is 11x14 so it's not easy to copy.

Is there anything in particular that you need info on?

I have asked Helm some questions but as of yet they haven't replied to my email. That was a few weeks back. As far as anything in particular I need info on, there are about 5 things the PO did to the wiring that I want to put back to original. Some things I have figured out, but a few behind the radio compartment that are just a mess. i.e. resisters, relays and the like. Hard to put into words.

Hey Pat,

I have a 1987 GL1200 and the Honda Factory Service Manual that came with it. Page 19-14 (actually two fold-out pages) are the pages you need for the INTERSTATE model wiring. I was able to scan them to a PDF file.

I tried, and you can't attach PDF files to a forum post. So, PM me your email address and I'll email it to you.

The nice thing about a PDF file is that you can blow it up huge on your screen and really see the fine detail. (You won't be able to see the detail that you need if I convert it to a JPG and attach it.)

I don't see a PM in my inbox yet.

Also, I see by your avatar you have an '86 Aspencade. That's an entirely different wiring diagram from an '87 Interstate. I have that one too, but would have to scan it separately.

Let me know for sure which year/model wiring diagram you want.

Bob

That is very strange. I had sent a PM to you Bob saying that juliemike54 had sent me one. I swear I did, but now can't find it. I remember having to go back and find your name and typed WingMan71. :? I see his avatar is an Aspencase, but he did have the one for my Intestate.

Thanks for your willingness to help me out.

That IS strange. I still don't have any PMs in my inbox, so I checked my preference settings to make sure that I have "Accept PMs" checked off and I do. Weird!

My Honda Factory Service Manual covers all GL1200s, from 1984 to 1987 and has wiring diagrams for all of them. I'll bet that's the same manual juliemike54 has.

At any rate, it looks like you got your Interstate wiring diagram, so hopefully you're good to go.
