Head gasket blown again

Postby rrmiller73 » Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:27 pm

Well, It's time to pull the right bank head off my 1200 again. The gasket was blown and had a lot of errosion on the head and block when I bought the bike last winter. I had the head resurfaced and blocked sanded the case deck and reassembled but it has seaped a little coolant into the exhaust all summer after parking it and it has grown progressifly worse. Took a ride down the Natchez Trace SW of Nashville, this morning(beautiful!) and it started steaming out the exhaust, got hot and started running bad by the time I got home. (150 mi) Now low/no compression #1,#3. Lucky I got it home. Any ideas how to machine the cyl. deck with out tearing down the engine?

Pulled the suspect head this evening and found big junks of the aluminum cyl. casting crumbling and erroded away from the steel sleeve between the 2 cylinders. The head gasket was still intact but the cyl. sleeve has enough warpage errosion it wouldn't hold out the coolant. There was coolant in both cyl. and through out the exhaust system. Cylinder bores and pistons still look fine. It looks like either replace the block or easier, a used engine unless someone knows of a way to repair a condition like this. Ideas???

Ouch. I think your best (easiest, cheapest) bet at this point is a new engine.
