Xmission/final drive whine?

Postby cdowns1 » Wed Dec 01, 2010 8:04 am

Been 20 years since I owned a 1200, is the whine from 40 - 50 mph normal?

There is a certain amount of whine from the straight-cut gears of the transmission, as well as a bit from the final drive. Changing the final drive lubricant is simple, and putting a good synthetic hypoid gear oil in there will keep bad things from happening in the future.

IIf you're worried about it, you might want to take an afternoon, and pull the rear wheel to make sure the final drive splines are correctly lubricated.
