1200 and 1500 Final Drive Assembly Interchangable?

Postby revtmuller1 » Sat Dec 18, 2010 4:54 pm

Hi all. I had my final drive assembly and drive hub go out on me last month on my GL1200A. I am finding the replacement parts for it to be bit pricey. I have heard that a GL1500 may interchange with the 1200 with some modification. Anyone know if this will work or not? Thanks.

I remember seening this here somewhere but couldn't find it. But I did find this.

"I have a 1500 final drive on my 1200; I used my 1200 rear wheel. You have to drill the 4 holes in the swing arm one size larger because the 1500 bolts are bigger. The only other thing is you have to get the 1500 axel spacer because it is a bit longer. If you try and use the 1200 spacer when you torque the axel nut the rear wheel will bind. Other than those two simple changes it is straight forward."

You can also google it.
Hope this helps.

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thanks Mooseman. I'm wondering does the drive hub interchange as well?

I don't know what is all involved in making it work, but I can tell you the 1500 rear end works great on the 1200. When I bought my 1200 the previous owner told me that he put a 1500 rear end on it because the 1200s wear out prematurely. I took it a goldwing tech and he confirmed it had the 1500 rear end. It is very smooth and easy on the bike.... :D

I have a little interest with this conversion, can anyone tell me if the final drive ratio's are similar, I pondered maybe the 1500 would be slighter higher ratio - more mph less revs?
Thank you, and a happy new year to all.
George
