Oil drain plug where is it?

Postby SAILOR » Wed Jan 05, 2011 8:02 pm

I'm a new owner of a GL1200 Aspencade 1984 version. I would like to know where the oil drain plug might be. Look at a post that says the plug below the old filter cover in the front of the engine, right below the radiator. I see a big plug in the back of the engine, but the is no plug in the front of the engine under the oil filter cover. Any thoughts on where the drain plug might be?

Also I just started up the big it smoked quite a bit after a few minutes the smoking slowed down, still smokes a little although it is a little cold in the northwest right now. Although the other day someone said when I pulled away from their house they saw some blue smoke. Should I be concerned?

Sailor The oil drain plug is in the rear of your motor, look where you found the oil dip stick down under the bike you will have to lay down under bike to see it. The other plug you are talking about by the oil filter just below your water pump housing is your drain for rad. fluid. Just a note if cant find a manual at the top of this site go to goldwings chrome they also have a full hayes shop manual for free download. Also if bike was setting on side stand for a while oil can leak into it a little smoke on start up is normal for this old bikes Hal

Thanks for the tip on the manual. In the manual it said something about a placing a new sealing washer over the drain plug. Where can I get a sealing washer? Is there a part number from NAPA for that?

It should have one on it already, change oil in both bikes in aug. I didnt put any thing on but the same plug that came off. If you get it off you should bee able to find one at auto parts if not,It will take a trip to local Honda dealer. Hal

Have a look at this: How to change your engine oil - it has lots of pictures that show just what to do. It's for the 1100, but the 1200 is almost exactly the same.

yep have seen this one, but the drain plug is different. I'm hoping to get that oil changed tomorrow. Got all the parts now I just have to warmup the bike and drain the oil.

Yes, the pictures in that are of my bike, and I have an aftermarket dipstick installed into the drain bolt hole, so it will look different.

Well I got that oil changed yesterday. Turns out I have an after market crome oil filter cover. Didn't seem to have anything fins that needed to be specifically lined up with the bike when I put it back on. Also the rubber o-ring for filter housind was not quite big enough to stay in the cover. I was afraid it would seal properly so I just used the old one that seemed in good shape. Another thing the washer between the spring and the filter was missing so found a replacement. On to the next project. Think in might be the fuel filter, or timing belt.

That rubber O-ring is always a tiny bit too small to stay in there. I rub a coat of motor oil on it and push it into the groove, and it tends to stay put so I can get the filter cover back on.

I could get is to stay put and was afraid it would not seal properly so I used the old one. Next time I might heat it in some boiling water to make it stretch a bit, and then put it in and let it sit a day or two so i might stay in the groove.
