1986 SEi fork seal replacement

Postby tech1 » Tue Jan 25, 2011 9:25 pm

Hi doe's anyone know if there are any special tools required and any tips for replacing fork seals?
Mine are not leaking much but a small leak. And what about replacing the springs? would anyone suggest replacing them while you are there.
Thanks Joe

Joe,
I have done this twice, one 86-A and my old 85-A. I am guessing the SEi is the same?
I have done it both times with the forks left mounted to the triple clamp.
I must admit when puting the top cap back on the fork I needed a little extra push to get it done, and I weigh 245. Socket on a speed drive and me standing on the bike and trying to push down while turning......a sight to see  The wife comes out to my man cave (garage) and just.. :o "Hey Love I could use just a little help". It was just right too.
I also bought a piece of 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 pvc pipe Tee. cut it in half long ways and used it to push the seal home, using the tee part to pound on with a mallet.
I will post a picture later of my seal driving tool.

The end with the arrows needs to be sanded down to fit inside the fork to drive the new seal in.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thanks But how do you remove and install the seals without removing the forks from the triple tree?

If you have a manual it will show you the steps.. Follow the steps for removing the forks except from the triple clamp. Remove the bottom bolt (damper rod allen bolt)at the very bottom of the fork tube before removing the top cap. This helps keep the damper rod from turning. Other wise you will need an air impact to lossen it. Get every thing loosened and remove the retainer with snap ring pliers. Then yank on the bottom fork tube like a slide hammer and it will come apart. You may have to jack the front of the bike a little to give clearance. Be very careful you don't go to high and let the bike fall off the center stand. A 2X6 or 2X8 under the center stand will give extra room.
Hope this helps.

Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.
