saddlebag latches

Postby stevenstrack » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:51 pm

I'm looking for advice as to what it will cost to restore all six of my saddlebag and trunk latches. I haven't found a place to purchase new ones so I think I need to look into restoring the ones I have. I'm getting ready to paint the whole bike and these latches definitely need to be re-chromed. Has any one had this done and what should I look at cost.

I am guessing (which isn't such a good thing) that you are talking about a GL1200. It'd be a good idea to let us know what year/model you have in your header.

You might want to seek out a talented locksmith if you need tumbler/key work. If all you want is to polish them you can invest in a hand held polisher or buffing wheel for a bench grinder. You'll be money ahead and the value of DIY.

Thanks,

Sorry I omitted its for a 83 GL1100I, I found i can purchase six new ones on motorcafe.com for $261.42 and at cheapcycle.com for $304.68, i assume they come with lock tumbler and keys and are in stock. The ones I have are pitted, one has a broken spring. I have tried to clean them up some but they really need some work and i think redipped in chrome bath. I sent an email to nu-chrome for a cost estimate but i'm afraid it will cost too much. Who knows what is best way to go?

I can see why you'd want to replace the broken one but, for me, a little pitting isn't enough reason to replace all of them for that kind of money.

If you're doing a TOTAL restore on it… well maybe but I seriously doubt you'll ever see the return out of the expenditure.

Thanks for the input. I did get a replie back from nu-chrome and they said the cost would be between $40-60 each and if they had to seperate the latch it would be on the high end. Too bad that everything for this bike costs an arm and a leg.
