NO SPARK

Postby Taken From Water » Thu Feb 24, 2011 11:23 am

Hello everyone, I just recently bought a 86' gl1200 aspencade. A garage find just sitting nicely rusting. I have been working on it for the past week and have checked everything that I could think of, and I can not get this bike to fire one tiny spark. NO SPARK AT ALL. Any ideas that does not include large hammers or destructive force?

I know this is basic.
1. Check to make sure engine stop switch on right handle bar is in the on position.
2. blk/wht wire goes to each coil and the Ignition control box. Check for 12 volts (battery voltage) with ignition switch on and stop switch in run position.
3. Ignition on use a test light to back probe the yel/blu and blu/yel at the ignition coil. Crank engine. Light should pulsate.
4. Check for opens in pulse generator.
5. Check ignition control uint ground by operating the horn. (Same ground)
6. Check coils with ohmmeter for resistance in coils.
You really need to get a manual that has a wiring diagram.
Do let us know what you find.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Hello everyone,

Good news, we have SPARK. Not a glowing spark but spark. Four (4) bad caps. Two (2) resistors and 2 caps. The horn is missing and that added to the confusion. Need to clean the tank and see what the deal with the fuel pump relay is and will let you guys know what is going on. Thanks for the advice.

Just remember,
"Smart fly stay away from sticky soup bowl" for full effect say it in Chinese accent!!

Just a note: the fuel pump is a pulse type and does not operate until the engine is turning over.
