brake lights not working

Postby kicker29 » Thu Mar 24, 2011 8:50 am

Hope you guys can help. I have a 1987 GL1200 Interstate I just bought last week. I am brand new to this as I haven't owned or ridden a bike since 1980. The brake lights are not working and I tested the rear brake light switch and it works but lights won't work. I have new bulbs and tested the light sockets and they work. When I put the test light in the last connector under the seat that goes to the tail/brake lights I get no power but the tail lights work. I'm thinking I have a short in the wire between the rear switch and the connector somewhere under the seat. My question is, if the front brake light switch was bad would that prevent the brake lights from working when operating the rear brake light switch??

In a word NO

Test your front brake switch anyway, pull the wires and test with an ohm meter when you apply the lever.

The pic may help you trace the problem.

If you have a good ground it could be the brake relay

I would also ck all the grounds for the brake light circuit how about ur hand brake when U pull it does the brake lights work. U can can also pull the wires off ur foot brake and touch them together and that will by pass that sws. let me know how u come out

Thanks. What I did was check the wires and light sockets with a test light. While applying the rear brake switch I put the probe on the green wire with yellow stripe and I got a bright light. When I went to the light sockets I put the probe on the green wires with yellow stripe and I got a very dim light. I took the wiring harness apart under the seat and thought I was onto some thing but turns out that the green wire with yellow stripe from rear brake switch goes into the harness and forward. I could not get to it. There are two green wires with yellow stripe in the harness under the seat that go towards the tail light sockets. One wire, while applying the rear brake switch gets a bright light and the other gets a real dim light on the test light. The wire with the bright light goes to the tail/stop light on the trunk and the wire with the dim light goes to the tail/stop lights down on the bottom of the bags. So now I do have one brake light working (on the trunk) but the other two down on the bottom of the bags I only have tail lights no brake lights. A little frustrated I came in and had supper. Will get a fresh start in the morning. I also tested the front brake switch and the test light lit on one wire but when I applied the brake switch I did not get a light on the other wire. Where might I be able to find the brake relay on this 1987 GL1200?? Thanks so much for your help so far.

I am going to throw a glich in your moring coffee. Give you something to ponder while wakeing up.
The center taillight brake light work off one circut and the lower taillight brake light work off another that gets it's signal from the first.
That's OK I am confussed also.....except I am always that way.....LOL
If the center brake light and tail light are working OK, but the lower, left and right brake are not you need to check the brake and taillight sensor located on the right side of the battery and to the right of the starter relay. This relay gets its imput from the first system and energizes the the second or lower brake lights (Left and Right) follow the grn/yel back to the brake and taillight sensor.
Thank You Tricky for the schematic.
My book says to turn the ignition off and disconnect the plug from the the brake light- taillight sensor.
Connect a jumper wire between the two GRN/YEL wires and turn the ignition on, and apply the brakes. If the brakes go on replace the sensor. You also might check for a loose or broken connection between these two points. I hope this help with your trouble shooting.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Hi Guys, thanks for all you help. Finally got the brake light working. After testing the swithes and relays it was the brake light relay right next to the ignition relay, thanks tricky for the picture. Went to the dealer and they did not have it in stock. Honda does not make it any more. The part # is 36130-mc7-003, fits 84-87 GL1200I, 84-86 GL1200A, 83 GL1100A, 83 Interepter 750, and 82-83 Magna 750. The parts manager at Archie's Honda in New Bedford, Mass. sent me to Joe's Used Cyles in Dartmouth, Mass. He specialises in Hondas. He had the part and was very reasonable. His e-mail-joemac35@hotmail.com. specialises in Hondas 1965 and up.
Thanks again everyone for all your help.
