Postby mikeyb » Mon Mar 28, 2011 6:46 am

1985 aspy just put in new head gaskets timing belts and adjusters new cutoff vavle synced carbs starts runs great but it has one spot if you hold it at around 2500 rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear it pops like its backfiring in one of the carbs. any ideas.

Did it do that before the repairs? My old 1100 did that.It was a broken inner spring on a intake valve. It may be one tooth off valve timing. That will change the scavenge angle(the point when both intake and exhaust valves are open).Check comp.on all 4 cyl (no more than 4 or 5 lb difference).

Yes it did it before the repairs the warmer the engine temp gets the less it will do it.

Sense the problem existed before the repairs, you can eliminate everything you repaired as the cause(assuming the repairs are spot on).So what's left?Verify first where the poping is coming from.Remove the air cleaner and run it open cavity with the lid up.Is it definitly there? Poping into the carbs usually indicate a vacuum leak or a lean fuel mixture(float level low)If it's in the exhaust,it's excess fuel being ignited.Check it out and let us know.

Now that you said something about vacuum lines it has a after market cruise control that has a vacuum line on the #1 carb.when it warms up again so i can get the bike out again i will unhook the line to the crusie and plug the end on the carb to see if makes any differance. Thanks for the reply.
