'84 wing uses a different starter than '85 - '87 wings. starters from 1000 and 1100 wings will not work either

it is for service pull out..........

some says bike on the center stand because there a plastic guide to kept chain to not drop in the engine..........

some says that it must be done on side stand.........like 1000,1100 GW

Claymer manual says late 1985 1200 , 1986 , 1987 have a chain plastic guide. (so ok center stand)

and says that 1984 and early 1985 dont have a plastic guide.........like the 1000,1100 GW.

NOBODY say the same thing.

is there at least 2 guys or more that have pull out the starter on a 84 1200 GW. not your neighbour or your cousin. YOURSELF .

i have to done mine and it is on the center stand and dont want to move it for nothing.

i had to start a tread , old tread or other tread on starter , no answer .

THE HOW TO SECTION (STARTER) is for a 1000, 1100 GW.

I have pulled the starter out of my 84 gl1200. I had it on the ctr. stand. The gear and chain stayed in place. When I pulled the engine out and pulled the back cover off, well lets just say if you pull the starter out and can get it back in, your very lucky!
As for multi fit years, the 84 only fits the 84!
she is in a leage all her own.
How many times do I have to tell ya,,, The right tool for the right job!

you did not say you can not in a other tread.........you pull out the engine? did you see a guide or something that help the chain and gear to not drop in the engine?

Nope, no chain guide in the 84. I just got lucky the chain and gear stayed inplace. As for the other years, I can only go by what the book says.

THANK YOU for your answer ........you are the first with a GW84 that do not have a guide to retain chain and gear.

i think 4 or 5 had a guide (84) ( with their answer)

maybe depends serial #.

did you pull out all the engine or take off the manifold stud?

Take off the left engine guard. Remover the left exhaust header pipe. Remove the shift lever and the 2 inside exh manifold studs. Then the starter will come out. Like I said be careful!

And if you need to replace the starter. You can use one from a 85 to 87 too... Just remove the planetary gear housing from the 85-87 starter and put the original planetary gear housing on the new starter body. You'll wear out 5 or 6 starters before you'll wear out that original set of planetary gears.

Old and one legged, but the '84 Wing isn't what it used to be either.
