basket case no start

Post by Grantly » Sat Apr 02, 2011 1:34 pm

I have an 85 gl1200 aspencade. it has been somewhat taken apart. the previous owner said it would crank but not start when warm. like at a gas station. it would roll start. He noticed it would backfire loudly while cranking. after 10 to 15 seconds of cranking. He removed to coils, lost interest and now I have it. I am trying to reinstall the coils. I read in forums the relay has issues. I removed it and noticed that it has been very hot and is scorched. I ordered a newer style one. I am trying to figure out which plug wires go to which coil towers and which wires goto which terminals on this new relay. The wires to the relay have been repaired in a very hack way. he said he had messed with the relay. also which coil power wires go to which terminals on the coils. Thanks for any help you can provide.

It could very easily have been something as simple as a weak/old battery.

When you turn it over, is it sluggish or turns over good? Mine gets cranky when the battery is low. It'll turn over, but very sluggish and won't always start then.
