86 GL1200 Asp SEi not charging

Postby RetNav » Wed Apr 20, 2011 10:01 am

My ride just stopped charging and I barely made it home.

Disconnecting the wires (yellow) to the left of the battery and checking the stator shows 40-60 VAC from the stator.
I have determined the regulator to be at fault and have located and ordered another one.

The PO already removed all the plastic connectors in this circuit and that is where I have a question.
When the new one arrives how is it wired? There is no identification on the old one and no plugs so I will have to hardwire it in place.
I don't have a wiring diagram and don't want to mess up the new one.

Did you check the voltage into and out of the old regulator before placing it at fault? You might also want to check the "enable" (black) wire going to it for +12V when the key is on. If a connector has failed somewhere causing that wire to not have +12V on it when the key is switched on, the regulator will just shut itself off - and a new regulator will do the exact same thing.

I did not check it hot, but will definitely do that before installing the new one.
Thanks for the information.

I'm new here but have the same problem with 1985. Will this info pertain to mine also?

Yes.The charging system is about the same for the 1100 and 1200.Just ask if you need specific instructions for testing and repair procedures.

I received the rectifier yesterday and installed the same day. Upon firing it up and putting a meter across the battery terminals I discovered 14.61 VDC.

It seems like the troubleshooting and install was correct.

Thanks for the responses and help.

On my 1200 Ltd the rectifier had a crack in the back. There is a black square patch that is eproxy glue it cover a curcuit board it had got so hot it cracked the solder on the board was touching them frame .It also made the plug at the stator so hot that the glue on the tape was desolving it did not make the plug melt but could have and with the rectifier crack it was a cold wonder it hadn't fried my electrical system.I hardwired the stator ordered a new stator and gasket and after finding out the rectifier was bad ordered a new one plugged it in bamb 14.3 volts 14.6 at the battery. The rectifier is longer than the stock one you are going to have to bolt only one bolt to the frame but if you tighten it enough it ain't going no where and it is tight in that area. I belive Honda could have placed that rectifier near one of these vents to keep it cool because it gets hot or design it with a fan to cool it like a computer anyhow it is working like a charm.I have a brand new stator with a stator gasket for a 1200 LTD and if I don't have any problems with stator I may sell it some day . Oh yes something you Wingers that just come to the forum listen to these people because there is a BUNCH I MEAN A BUNCH of good PEOPLE that love these old bikes and know a heck alot about these old girls. One thing about these old bikes they are not plastic like this ugly bike that is now comming out of Japan I have said all i can say Have a Blessed day.
