can anyone explain the difference in the types and numbers on the cdi. a friend needs to replace his cdi on his 85 gl 1200. are the cdi interchangeable. I see 3 or 4 with different numbers on ebay for the same bike.

Ohhh...ok. Now, just what does it DO? Is it like a sparkplug? Or glowplug? Sorry to ask, but, like I said, i'm new to this and don't know much of the mechanics.

Here's what I see in the GL1200 parts manual for igniters:

1984: 30400-MG9-004
1985: 30400-MG9-741 (Interstate and Aspencade only)
1986: 30400-MG9-741 (Interstate and Aspencade only)
1987: 30400-MG9-741 (Interstate and Aspencade only)

CDI=capacitive discharge ignition. It receives a pulse from the pickup coil, amplifies it,and then dumps the higher pulse into the coil pack.

That's a great explanation for this...Can I put one of these on my 81? Would my tire spin even faster with it, goes pretty speedy now..

Sure, all you need is silicone and duct tape to fix it up. Actually the 81 does have a CDI ignition system.Regardless of what it's called , the theory is the same.A good hot spark when cranking.A vast improvement over points system.I'm trying to figure a way to change my Argo 8x8 to a CDI.It's a 78 model with a 20hp Kohler twin.Just a little hard to start sometimes.
