Cranking....Now not cranking

Postby Big Ed » Thu Apr 28, 2011 11:17 am

Hello all.

I replaced a 1200 1984 Interstate with another 1984 aspencade engine....That was the easy part. After all is hooked up I put the power on and gave it a crank. After a few seconds of pushing the starter button (after a few second delay) it turns over. for some reason there was a delay in turning the starter. This happened a few times. Sometimes no cranking at all. Now no cranking whatsoever. Checked the relay and it is working , but when installed the relay does not (click) work. Everything worked fine up to Febuary , before engine change. Fuses are good. I never got to the point where I got the engine to fire up due to this irregular cranking action.
Any Ideas ???
Thanks. ED

First. Is the neutral light on?Second,Pull in the clutch and re-try.If this gives no results, clean the starter switch. Here's a pix of the circuit.

Clutch and light I've done that ... no go. I'll give the switch more attention.
Thanks. Ed

The yellow/red wire at the starter relay should light up when pushing the start button. If it does the relay isn't grounded.if no volts there, the start switch or ignition switch may be at fault.A test probe will tell fast.Usually the grease Honda used during assembly has dried up and is causing a poor connection on the contacts.Clean them up and use a little dielectric grease to re-lube.

Hello All
It seems the neutral connector and or the shift sensor had a bad connection. I checked the wiring and connections cleaned them and greased them up , pluged it in and the engine turned over right away. I pulled the relay and had it checked and worked fine.
Thanks for all your input. It did help me get to the bottom of the problem.
Ed.
