what is this sensor for?

after removing carbs for clenup i noticed disconnected wire for a sensor.
what this sensor is for?
Can i just simply re-connect?

If you are talking about the brass colored thing sticking out from the casting, just to the right of the hole in the engine lifting tab, with no wire attached to it, it is your fan switch... The casting is the thermostat housing.

It looks like the wire is laying on top of the block nearby...

You should reconnect it, possibly it got disconnected during the carb removal?

Single wire is the temperature sensor, double wire is the fan switch (on the other side of the fan shroud, switch is mounted in the thermostat housing cover)

I checked my factory manual for locations of the two sensors... the one you have pictured is the temperature sending unit which is mounted in the water tube assembly and thermostat housing body, and should be a single conductor wire hook up..

thank you! it looks like wire broke off from connector. Other wire that goes toward back (not entirely visible on pic) have damaged sleeve, again from rubbing,
it looks to me that this is due to having unsecured wires in tide space between parts.
