personal opinion, stator or alt conversion?

Postby bigmac7139 » Wed May 04, 2011 12:06 am

got a buddy who purchased a 85 aspencade, i guess after he got it and started home the battery went dead. after removing the battery cover he found that the stator wires were unhooked. it seems someone cut them and placed spade connectors on em and then never re connected em.going to have him bring it over to check the stator in the manner of all the tech help i have found here, as well as the fuse and reg. connections. if it is indeed found that he needs to replace the stator, here lies my question. drop the motor and get a new stator and re-install the motor? Or in the chance that he may add extra lighting at a later time, go ahead and do the alt. conversion? I'm leaning more for the alt. in the idea he may need to do it again later on depending on how long he has the bike. just wondering how it has worked out for those who have done the alt. vs those who opted for a new stator. either are do-able, just wondering which is better in the long term? any opinions would be greaty appreciated, thanks

with the alt conversion you'll have more power for lights and things plus it will be easier to change when it goes bad. i'll be getting the alt conversion kit later this year

I am a fan of OEM standard.Yes,modifications can yield different results,eg.more accessories can be added, but the original manufacture design did last 27 years.

I did the alt. last year and have had no problems, made my own parts from the info i got on this site and after making the parts it took me about 6 hrs to put it to gether, if i had to do it again i would do it all over again in fact i will be doing my sons 86 aspy some time soon, his stator is on its last legs, checked it yesterday and tow legs measured 50 and the third had a 0 reading. good luck no mater how you go.
