Strange running question

Postby noeleo » Thu May 05, 2011 3:44 pm

So, last weekend we were on a "get out of dodge" ride and wound up in Springfield, MO. While riding through town, we had a mishap at a stop light where my knee went out and the bike fell onto the crash bars. Broke my left wrist, and hurt my pride, but none the worse for wear. My angel was looking out for me that day. Immediately after, the starter began the dreaded "slow crank, growl, no crank". We had to push it off once, and stopped at a gas station to refuel. Left the engine running. While filling, three different times there were periods of increased idle speeds. Went from idling at 1000 RPM to about 1300 RPM. This kind of worried me, and the more I think about it, the more I realize there is probably something wrong. I just don't know where to start to diagnose this problem. Seemed to run fine on the rest of the trip. Maybe I should run some seafoam in the tank, just in case. Has anyone else encountered a problem such as this? Seems like I always get the "weird" problems. I did order a starter, and it should be here today, so I will install it tonight.

BTW, after leaving Springfield, for the rest of the trip, we rode to St. Louis and stayed the night. Had to push it three more times. (Glad the bike runs and starts well.) Then rode home in the worst rain I have ever ridden in. Made it home OK, and the wife just grinned and said she had a GREAT time. She's a real trooper to put up with all the rain and say that.

While your messing with it,go through the charging system and battery condition.A failed charging system will show up as poor starting, poor running etc.

The reason the engine surged while filling the tank with it running is because as you fill the gas tank, fuel vapors are displaced by the gasoline you're pouring in, and those vapors come out the filling neck, and are promptly sucked into the air filter and into the engine. Extra fuel going into the engine makes it rev up a bit. So eliminate that symptom as part of your diagnosis.

Glad you're alright, but too bad about your wrist.

I did, indeed finish the trip and have ridden to work daily except for today (threats of hail). Even went on a 300 mile rounder by myself last Saturday (wife had to work). It will take more than that to keep me off the 'OldWing'.

Thanks, WingAdmin. The fuel vapors "escaped" me. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.) Kind of think, though, that the vapors and the upward RPM change would indicate a lean condition at normal "unvented" idle. Maybe I'm off on a tangent, but I probably will check the idle mixture screws and maybe do a lean drop test. Finish up with another carb synch and should be better. I have noticed in the past couple of days that the old girl just doesn't seem to be as smooth at idle.
