87 aspencade speed sensor

Postby 211012230 » Thu May 19, 2011 5:40 am

Need speed sensor for 87 aspencade, dealer says not available but can get 86 sensor and should fit but speed may be off. Anyone have experience with this, or source for 87 sensor. Thanks

Don't know pulse/rotation specs,What I can tell you is that the speed sensor is half mechanical, half electronic.I'd test it first before I'd just replace it in hopes that it's the problem.Testing is straight forward. It's got 3 wires hooked to it.one is ground, one is about 5 volts dc,one goes from near 0 to near 5 volts as the wheel is turned. If its got ground and 5 volts but no switching(that's what runs the spedo) then it may not be turning the magnet inside.Check it out,my tab was bent a little and stopped it.

They are hard to find, I had the same problem with my '84 Aspy. Check www.wingstuff.com and www.bikebandit.com :)

I had a problem with my 85 asp and thought it was a bad speed sensor but when I went to remove the speed sensor I found that the nut on the end of the shaft that holds the magnet that rotates to cause the pulses had come off and the magnet slid out on the shaft and the sensor was not able to pick up the pulses. When I slid the magnet back down and put the tiny nut and lock washer back on the spedo worked OK.
I might be worth looking at.
