86 ASP HYDRO CLUTCH PROBLEM

Postby tomcatlp » Mon May 23, 2011 3:39 pm

While riding I noticed a lax hand clutch, drove home checked master cylinder oil was a little low filled master attempted banjo bleed. pressure at handle bars came back up, however engin stalled when placed in gear. opened master cylinder oil again was low checked for leak on ground, no leaks! filled master with master cylinder cover off to watch effect of slow pumping. oil pumps good. I noticed oil getting lower as I pumpted continued to refill master. no leaks visible on bike or ground. I used 1 and 1/2 containers of DOT 4, master cylinder is empty a day later, no leaks found. please WHAT DO YOU THINK?

It sounds like you have a bad seal in your clutch slave cylinder and you are pumping fluid into the clutch housing. The slave cylinder is not hard to rebuild but is a pain in the a** to take off and put back on. I rebuilt mine a few weeks ago. I got the rebuild kit from Saber Cycle. If you rebuild the slave cylinder it might be better to rebuild the clutch master cylinder at the same time.

You will also need to change your oil as the brake fluid will be in your crankcase. You would be better off to change oil before you run the engine again. Brake fluid could damage engine parts. I don't know what size containers you were using but one and a half cans in the engine can't be good.
