egine shut off

Postby campbells0220 » Fri May 27, 2011 2:17 pm

I was driving the other night and the engine just shut off. No spitting or sputtering just shut off. It set for an hour started up and drove 2 miles and stopped at stop light and it shut off again. There is no juice between relay and fuel pump when it shuts off. Can anyone help?

Hi and welcome , two things I would check one do you still have the old dogbone fuse if so change it out to new blade fuse holder. Two start the bike and wiggle the wires from your key switch move your handlbars from side to side all the way see if bike cuts out. The dogbone fuse is located to the right of your battery and may look fine but they get hairline cracks in them and when they get hot they will open up killing your bike and all power. The key switch and wires will cause the same problem had it happen on my bike I found it was a bad key switch. Good Luck and let us know what you find.. Hal

Thanks for the reply I will check on changing the fuse. But the bike didn't lose power still had lights. I was thinking it could be the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump. I was told since they started using ethanol that their has been a drastic increase in fuel pump issues. The crazy thing if it is the fuel pump is it didn't act like it was running out of gas it just shut off like you turned the key off. Thanks!

I had written concerning my engine shutting off. Two towing bills, and 3 shops later they have finally found the problem. The pick up coil is going bad. It is $560.00 to repair and will take 1-2 weeks. They have to order the part.
