You could have a bad Air Temperature Sensor.
Look under the tour box on the left hand side (if seated on bike) and under the tour box is a computer with 5 LED's, these lights tell of a problem with the CFI. The engine must be started for the lights to produce a 'Code'.

They usually some times called a Tour-pac (HD), trunk, or tour box.

Idle speed is 1000 rpms +/- 100 rpms
Check for any of the following:
1. Ignition Timing
2. Improperly operating ignition control unit or pulse generators
3. A leaking head gasket or a vacuum leak
4. Air valve faulty
5.Low fuel pressure
6. Intake pressure pipe sensor not working
7. Air valve or reed valve not working
8. Obstructed fuel line
9. Improper valve timing
10. Compression is low

How many miles on the wing?

I have purchased the exact bike, make, model, and year, about a week ago. This bike does the same as you describe your bike does. Lot's of pops going on when it is cold. When it gets up to normal temp, it runs like a champ. Only minor pops in lower gears occasionally after it warms up. I have been following this post to see if anyone has found a simple answer too. The guy I bought it off of said that he has had other goldwings in the past that did the same thing. Could have been a line of stuff to get me to buy the bike. It worked. I love the bike.

I'll share the test procedure with everyone here. I know it's an air sensor but this is how it's tested by the book.
Remove the sensor and suspend it in cold water.
Heat the water slowly and use a thermometer to monitor water temp.
With the meter set to K-ohms measure the resistance between the two terminals.
2-3K-ohms @ 68F
0.2-0.4K-ohms @ 176F
If the sensor doesn't meet the specs, it's bad.
Make sure the connections are tight and clean.
