timing plug and other things RE: 85 Limited

Postby dshepard » Tue Jun 07, 2011 11:16 am

HI guys, does anyone know where i can get a CLEAR (see through) timing hole plug so that I can check the basic timing? (It's hard to see through all that oil :)

Just got this 85 limited edition and got it running, BUT it is only getting 28 miles per gallon. I have an 84 aspencade that gives me 45 mpg....

Also this limited edition runs good, but it does NOT have near the accelleration the 84 has. The spark plugs look hazy gray after 300 miles of running.

So if anyone has any suggestions that would help any of my problems, I would be grateful. Especially sence my honda dealer told me that I was on my own. NOOOO help from them.

THANKS DON

Honda does sell a clear timing plug for around $12, I don't know the part number offhand. If you can get a dealer to cooperate and look it up, they can order it.

I saw on a site where a guy bought a cheap pair of reading glasses and taped the lens in place over the hole to do it:

I've also seen someone who cuts acrylic bar stock, taps a thread on the outside and polishes the ends, to accomplish the same thing:

I've seen these sold for Harleys, I don't know if they would fit into Hondas or not.

Checked in the GL1100 service manual and came up with the following for the 'timing inspection plug': Honda Code 0630681 and part number 07999-3710001. Hope this helps.
