Gl1200 shuts down while driving

Postby Bradtina » Mon Jun 13, 2011 11:24 am

I have a 1985 gl 1200 goldwing. After it is warmed up it will most of the time shut down. Sometime you can go for 30+ miles and sometimes only 10 or so miles.Sometimes it will start right back up and run good and some time you half to let it sit for 15-30 minutes before it will start back up. while trying to restart it it will backfire a lot. Any feed back is appreciated

Were thinking a bad connection in the ignition module,or just thermal.

Had the same problem with my 84 aspy try this to help find the problem, put your bike on center stand and start it. Turn your handle bars all the right and then all the way to the left,if bike cuts out, could be lose connector from ignition to plug. I found it was a bad ignition switch as one of the little tabs holding the base was broken. Also if you still have the dog bone fuse on your bike I would replace it with a weather proof blade fuse holder . The dog bone fuse may look ok but get small hairline cracks and when it gets hot will open up killing your bike. Also check the three yellow wires to the left of your battery if it still has old plug I would cut it out and soldier the wires along with heat shrink and tape. good luck and let us what you find. Thanks for the help. I started it for about 3 minutes tonight turned it off. Then thought I would take the gas cap off, when I did there was a little pressure in the tank. Is that normal? Then I put it up on the center stand. Started it. Let it run on half choke or less to warm up. it ran for about 5 to 7 minute and it started back firing. I then took the gas cap off to see if that would stop the back firing, but it didnt. I was thinking electrical at first but it might be in the fuel delievery system or Carbs. I dont know just trying everything I can. Thanks for all your input.

Have you tried running a can of sea foam thru your gas might help clear your carbs ,and yes you will have some pressure in tank. But if it was a stopped up vent you would here a large sucking sound pulling air in. If you take your fuel line from the pump and add a tube to a large bottle, start it up and see how much gas its putting out. Have you changed your fuel filter lately may be clogged up,just a thought I would try the sea foam as I and others here have used it with good results. Hal

Already Put sea foam in it. Hard wired the dog bone fuse to a hard wire fuse. New fuel filter, new Air cleaner, Hight test gas. I have tried all the easy things now I guess I will tear into it a little farther.

Do you have one of those clamp type automotive timing lights?
I found a honda car mis-firing when I had the timing light running,it would start to flash irregularly then quit.Found not enough spark to fire the strobe.
I wonder if a neon lamp next to the ignition wire would light without contact? You know, one of those home test lights for 110 ac?
