OD/Neutral lights

Post by willboy57 » Fri Jun 17, 2011 3:09 pm

My OD and neutral lights stopped working a couple of months ago (87 1200 Interstate). I suspect it's the change switch located on the inside transimission cover. I wanted to wait until "winter maintenance" to get in there to fix it as it doesn't affect the operation of the bike overall. But..........I was riding today and shifted from third to fourth and, you guessed it, the neutral light came on; shifted to fifth and it went out (the OD light did not come on). Hasn't happened the rest of the day. I still think it's the change switch but I am definitely open to other theories if anyone has them.

Thanks

Check the clutch switch diode. Test the diode with a meter in both forward and reverse bias.
Test the gear switch before tearing bike apart, find connector and test.

If you had the front cover off,the switch is 180 degrees off.
