Intersting question

When you change your 84 Gl1200 i engine to a 86 Gl1200 A engine, do you have to change the cdi box? I have got a new set of carbs on and set. The fuel mileage has gone WAY up :D The take off is much better, but mid range throttle and gunning it she bucks. $th and 5th gear she bucks when you accell or put a load on like going into a hill. Cruzing down the road she just sings along, it's just when you give her gas or you come to a hill. I didn't know if that would make a diff or not. The guy I got the engine from has and 85 he is going to send me when I can get a shipper.

Unless the ignition system is bad, there's no reason to replace it .Spark(enough of it)at the correct time ,static timing , vacuum advance circuits ,gear position sensor wires to the ignition module.

I seem to remember that gears 1 to 3 use vacuum advance and 4 and 5th use electronically controlled advance.the ignition module tell the difference by a gear selector switch wired to the ignition module along with the vacuum hose.

I'd be looking very close at the timing system before the engine or carbs.

 Well I found the reason for the bucking and missing. Not at all what I expected or were I was looking. I always tell others, check the simple thngs first, but I never seem to follow my own advice. :o The other night we were sitting outside and I had the radio on the old girl and for some reason I wolked over and pulled the #1/3 plug wires off to look at them. then I pulled off the lower rubber caps, and wow :o the #3 insulater was broke in 2 places. She had been arcing the hole time. I used crazy glue to put it back together and wraped with electrical tape and for 2 days now not a miss :D Goes to show ya, head your own advice
