'84 GL 1200A SPEED SENSOR

Postby WINGRIDER345 » Tue Jun 28, 2011 9:14 pm

Enroute from Mississippi to Michigan my speed sensor went out. I took the bike to the shop and they said it was fried and that I would need a new one. Any one know where I can get a new one? :?: :)

I hate it when a "qualified"serviceman just says a part is fried. It's such non-descriptive that it makes me believe he didn't even test it or examine the problem.Easier to just replace the whole thing.
I've never laid hands on one , but some here have.I understand that it is a mechanical, magnetic, and electronic sensor(cheep hall effect transistor)and sometimes it's a minor repair rather than replace the whole chunk. It's worth looking into.
If it don't work now, what's the harm in testing it,tearing it apart and looking at the guts. You plan on throwing it in the trashcan anyway?

I had a problem with my 85 Asp last year, the speedo just quit working. I opened the box that the sensor is in and removed the sensor and something just did'nt look right. I checked the small magnet that turns to make the pulses that the sensor picks up. The tiny nut had come loose that holds the magnet in place and the magnet had slid out on the shaft so far that the sensor was not in range of the magnet to pick up the pulses.
When I slid the magnet back in place and put the nut and lockwasher back on the speedometer worked fine. It would'nt hurt to check.

The test procedure in my Clymer manuel only says to turn the speed sensor with a screwdriver and check for voltage changes in the wiring.
To check what I am talking about you need to remove the 4 screws in the speed sensor box and there you will find the round magnet ( actually 8 magnets together into one small round piece) and there you will find the very small nut that I found loose on mine.
My Clymer manuel does not show any views of the inside of the speed sensor box or any procedure for repair of the speed sensor.
There could be a lot of these parts that have been replaced over the years when they only needed that little nut put back on and tightened.
I any of you have one of these laying around your shop that you have changed out, it might not hurt to check them out, you may end up with a good spare laying around.

Test the old one to make sure. Here is a place with a desent price.
http://www.ronayers.com/ProductDetails/N/687/SKU/530232
Check the part number to make sure they are the same. My 86-A is 37700-MG9-931.
When I bought my 86 it had a leaking left front fork seal. I think it had been leaking for a long time. Some of the oil had gotten inside and made it all bubblie and I guess fried some of the eletronics.
Test showed bad and the replacement did the trick. I checked where I had orderd mine and kept getting an error in the web page. Direct Line Inc. out of NC.
I didn't find any on e-bay.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

i have the 85 LE with the almost the same sensor. i also had left fork leak down and into the sensor. when i took it apart found 2 diodes, 2 capacitors ,one resistor, and one transistor (an 2N1204 type which was used manly in the mid to early 70's )which was shorting out from the fork oil mixed with the gel used in there to try and keep us users out( didn't work for me ) removed the stuff and puff it works,so if any body has any bad ones that they didn't throw out please let me know cause i would love to have them.

Sabre Cycle has one listed for $269. It is kind of high but if no one else has one.

Of course, Saber Cycle will probably sell you a Chinese knockoff that doesn't fit right, will fail in two months, and if you dare complain, they'll write you a profanity-laced email yelling at you telling you that it's all your fault, then ban you from ever purchasing from them ever again. :)

Jeez, is that all I have to do the ensure I never order from Saber Cycle? It might be worth a profanity-laced email to make sure, in a moment of weakness, I do not order from them again.

Hey Everybody that drives a GL1200 Aspencade- I am having trouble with my speed sensor- looks like Honda doesn't support this part anymore- used is only way to go? I might have found a soulution- looks like the sensor from a 2000 Valkerie might be a fit- I just ordered one from Ebay- will post the results as soon as I get it- Anyone else tried same or similar fix? Thanks - Dennis in Anchorage Ak

I found that Honda does not cross reference their parts.. My Digital sensor went out and I wasnt going to pay The $ that salvage yards want. I found that a 2006 Valkerie and other models use the same digital sensor. I only paid $ 77.00,, The sensors are not that uncommon and you only pay big bucks if you search for the 84 part # .. My speed is accurate

YES!!! the valkrie speed sensors work! I got a used one offEbay for cheap-was new- had to change the plug - works great- After all the things Ive heard about Saber Cycle, I wouldn't buy anything from them. Looks like these forums and sharing knowlege solves most wing problems- Good Job all!! Dennis in Anchorage
