Front brake switch

Postby DavidT » Fri Jul 15, 2011 8:55 am

Hi, all. Searched the site, but could not find this answer. My front brake switch does not work on my 86 Aspy. Took the wires off, shorted them, and the brakes come on. Bad switch, no brainer. Here's the rub- taking the switch to the bench and checking with a meter, it had high resistance in normal position, and OPEN in the activated position. Took it apart and cleaned the contacts, now have almost dead short in normal, and still open in activated position. This defies all logic, captain. Anyone know the internal operation of this little ****?
Thanks,
David

OK, OK, do I feel stupid or what? Went out to the bike, and THIS time noticed the operation of the switch in relation to the lever. It works just the opposite of what I thought, held in (open) when the lever is released, and let out when the lever is pulled. Problem solved, brake lights working, all is well.

Actually the switch is mounted so the lever pushes in the little button when the brake is off. When you pull the brake lever it releases the button. The switch it normally backward of what you would expect. It's refereed to as a "normally closed contact"switch.
When it's mounted , the lever actually activates the switch to the off position.

I guess I jumped the gun on the post,Glad you figured it out.
My rear brake switch was flaky, I pried out the white plastic and scraped all the crud off too.
