no dash lights when I turn on the ignition key

Post by andylicata » Sun Jul 17, 2011 4:59 pm

I am having trouble with my 1984 gl1200. I turn the key and nothing comes on. I removed and charged the battery, then replaced it and had the same result. I looked at all the fuses and found none to be a problem. I also checked and replaced the main fuse. I then bought a new battery and had the same result, no lights on the dash nor in the "park" position.

Could there be a problem with the connection on the solinoid?

Thanks,
Andrew

On the right side of the fork well remove the rubber cover on the connector bar and check for voltage at the heavy RED wire that is going to the IGN coil, this should have voltage without IGN switched on. If none then do go look at the main connector at the Solenoid.
You may find something similar to the picture below

Oh Yeah - I know that picture all right - could have been taken on my bike. I replaced the connector and it fried again - then I did some reading and found out this is a problem with this year bike. I took the two red wire from the front of the connector, wired them together and then wired in a 30 Amp blade fuse holder (weatrherproof) to the positive terminal of the battery.
Problem solved.

Do keep a close watch on the auto fuse too, that can burn up too if the fuse gets loose, crimp it tight.

Right !

If you use a weatherproof fuse holder, it has a rubber cap that snaps down over the fuse - holding it securely in place - keeps the wter out too!
