I just changed my stator and put it back together and now it won't start it turns over and backfires. Does anybody know what the problem could be?

Assuming it ran before the stator problem(not trying to be a butt here),it's most likely something you put back wrong or didn't plug in.Plug wires reversed? If it backfires,it's getting spark at the wrong time.Maybe something to do with the mechanical advance mechanism location pin. Here's a couple of pix.

yea it was running fine before putting the stator on just not charging. What does the mechanism pin do?

It' a very small pin in the shaft that likes to fall out.It keeps the mechanical advance mechanism in the correct position. If it fell out,the mechanism will fit on OK but may not be in the right position and cause the timing to be off.
