wierd sucking and blowing noise

Postby alsostuck » Mon Jul 18, 2011 8:52 pm

I recently purchased an 86 aspencade with 52000 miles. It ran great when I first got it. I let my son take it for a ride and when he brought it back, it now has a noise similar to a bello sucking and blowing. It is rather noticable at idle, but nearly goes away at higher RPMs. Still runs great and no noticable loss of power. Timing belts were just installed and the noise is still there. This bike has fuel injection. Any one out there with any ideas what this may be?

Stick a piece of 3/8" x 3' hose in your ear ant trace the noise. It's kinda like a stethoscope.

Is your bike fuel injected? If so, check the reed valves. There are 2, one on each side of the engine. They are connected to all 4 intake manifolds with red fabric covered hoses. They are also connected to each other and to the air valve with larger black rubber hoses. The hoses are prone to rotting and splitting at the valves, which causes exactly what you are describing. Basically inhaling and exhaling as the reed valves open and close. If your bike is not fuel injected, non of the above applies to it.

Thank you for that one. It certainly sounds your on to something. I am hoping that it will not hurt it to run it for the rest of the summer. It seems to run just fine and I am wanting to get as much riding time as I can. I'll tear it down this winter.
