Timing belts

I have a 1984 1200A. I was told the timing belts sould be replace very 5 years or 60,000 miles. The bike has 33,788 miles on it, and I was wanting to know if that is true. Can you help me. Thanks

For peace of mind those belts are long over due to be changed. Remember these are interference engines and if the belt breaks, ouch!
There's different numbers being thrown around on when timing belts should be changed, but like anything it is an item subjected to wear it needs to be changed, especially if they are original or there is no record of their last change.

Exactly what Trike lady says.. If they fail, the bill can be huge, much better to change them now and be sure of many more trouble free years.. It is not expensive or difficult to change them, do not use Honda belts (They are good but very expensive) look on this site and you will find equivalent belts from Napa and other car part places that are much cheaper than Honda belts.

Thank you, I will change the belts. The bike runs good, but at 1800 to 2300 rpms. it act like it is missing. I run seafoam thought the gas and oil and no change. Also sync carbs. No change, I talk to a bike shop and say to change the belts or it could be in the carbs.

The belts are not going to cause bad running (they just break and bang your engine is damaged). If you have poor running it's either a carb problem (Dirt in the carbs or badly adjusted carbs) or it's ignition timing. Older wings have a mechanical advance for the timing and the rubber parts perish over time and that stops the mechanical advance from working, causing poor running at low RPMs (below 2000). I would be checking the mechanical advance first and if that checks out Okay, I would be planning on a carb overhaul..

You are lugging the engine if you try to drive it at 1800-2200 rpm's. You need to change gears and run it arround 3000 rpm for power and efficiency. Do you have an operators manual or a service manual / If not you should buy one.

I recently bought a 1985 aspencade with 25,000 miles on it, 2nd thing I did was replace the timing belts, very inexpensive "piece of mind"

My 1100 had 51,600 miles on it and no written maintenance records outside of oil changes. Among the first things I did was to change out the timing belts. I definitely used NAPA belts.

can you tell me more about this? I assumed my problem was carb related but maybe i should check this first.

I read that the timing belt from a 1983 Toyota Tercel is an exact fit for a 19894 gl1200a, does anyone have any experience or advise on this?

Gates belt number T070 is the belt Your reffering to for the Toyota and will fit the 1200 and has the same spec.s as O.E.M.

If you don't know when the belts have been changed. Or you can't remember when you changed them Or you buy a bike that has no history THE BELTS NEED CHANGED :D

to awlkrsn: Thanks for the info. I am going to install the conversion kit & I will change the timing belts at the same time. Not much riding time left here in the Great White North.
