Goldwing Gurus. No Tunes, Help!!!

Postby hip001 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 8:51 am

Hey guys I'm looking for options here. When I bought my 1985 GL1200 Interstate project bike it did not have the radio or speakers. I'm looking for "tunes" options and ideally would like something that sounds good but low cost. I have a iPhone/iPod and could get by with tunes coming from them via aux port/plug of some kind. I've seen some with speakers mounted to handle bars but i'd like to use my factory speaker locations in the dash if possible.

Any ideas here? Thank you for your help!!!!!

I hear a marine grade stereo works good. Has cd, most have usb and/or separate ipod hookup. They are also water proof due to the fact the are used on boats. You should be able to find an aftermarket mounting plate to install the radio.

Thank you Seabee! I wondered about those too. I just found something smaller online called the "Rock Box". It looks more like what I'm looking for but it's $299. I don't really need or listen to CD's anymore so I was hoping not to have to install a full size unit. I also found a speaker with amp set by "Pile" model PLMCA30 $79 that has weather proof handlebar mounted 400w speakers. It has a MP3/Ipod imput which i think is all I will need. I can get radio stations on my iPhone using the Iheartradio app. My idea is to mount these speakers into the original speaker locations. Not sure if this will work but it's what I'm pondering.
My taste is for the absolute best available (I'd be on a GL1800 if money were no object)but the economy and reality of kids in college have made my options more, how you say..... focused! lol! Maybe I should of picked up that TNT 8-track player I saw at the garage sale!! :o

p.s. I'm not trying to name drop or advertise for any of these brands. This is what my web search has come up with so far.

so far my focus has been reliability and safety. Rebuilt front forks, rear shocks, brakes front and rear, rebuilt carbs, used fuel pump, removed all rusted bling, replaced rear tire, & replaced windshield. Now I hope I have it to the point where riding is not a test to see if you can make it back home! My wife loves the comfort of this bike so I got that going for me!!

Thanks Virgilmobile. That is a option when alone but most rides are with the wife. Will that work for both of us?

Well we both have iphones and unlimited mobile to mobile calling so we both get music and one button touch redial...That's our intercom.End the call and back to the music.Obviously we both got the bluetooth unit.Cost $110 + tax.Cheeper than a marine radio and speakers that she can't hear at 60mph.

Oh, by the way.I don't really care for the same music she likes and mine is a bit lower in volume. That's why I like the earbuds,She can hear me cause it pauses the music on the call.

WIhen I lost the radio system in my 89 wing, I opted for similar to the pile system you are talking about.
I just wired in the speakers on the bike instead of using the ones that came with the unit. You can probably find used stock speakers that will fit in the bikes boxes for speakers pretty inexpensively.
It worked for me until I totaled the trike, then they didn't work so well anymore. So Make note: Do not crash bike after installing tunes.
