'84 Gl 1200 final drive

Postby RGChilders » Sat Aug 06, 2011 6:58 pm

Hello every one;

I hope someone can offer some insight into my problem. I have a 84 GL 1200, and recently, it developed an issue in the final drive. I struck a pothole that was larger than my first estimate, when I attempted to continue on my way, It had just enough "gumption" to make it about 1/3 of a mile in order to get off the road. At this point, no power is being transmitted to the rear tire, but there is a "grinding" sound when the bike is put in gear. The best way I can describe the sound is to say it sounds like a yoke is slipping. Any advice, or insight into this issue would be greatly apreciated, I would rather repair the bike, (if I can afford it), than to sell it for parts.

Thanks

About all you can do is start tearing it apart,check each assembly as you go.Everything is suspect from the wheel splines all the way to the output shaft.You could pull the rubber boot loose off the engine,put it in gear and hand turn the rear wheel to see if it's between the two.

Thank you Virgil, I'll keep that in mind when I get started.

Oh,by the way,Take lots of pictures.The state of Nebraska will pay for repairs to a damaged vehicle caused by defective road maintenance.I had to push the subject but they bought me a new rear tire after it blew on a cattle crossing,including the labor to install it.
