1986 1200 GL INTERSTATE

Postby AvechuchoAxel » Mon Aug 08, 2011 5:55 pm

I need help with my intended proyect..... I have an extra LCD speedometer and a cruise control setup out of a Aspy same year.. My question is......... what retrofits must be done to get this working on my Interstate. I have access to many other parts locally here in Los Angeles area in case something is missing...

To start I know that my Interstate uses a cable speedo, probably need the electronic sender unit, along with the harness that goes from the wheel hub to the cluster.

Also I want ot hook up the cruise control, wich in fact, is the most important of the retrofits afterall.... The setup I have have all the parts and actuators, control units and handlebar controls.

In the meantime I'm looking for a good looking Aspy, but I do really want to know if the retrofits are possible to be done.

Thanks! Axel

I'm sure it can be done. I think you need to look at the parts diagram and start with the parts needed for that paticular system and then a good electical diagram to follow to make all the parts work as intended. Sould be a fun project for someone that has time and acess to the needed parts. The Aspy has a lot more electical plus the cruise control has it's own systems.
Myself I'll just ride what I have and look for the upgrades I want in a newer bike when I'm ready.
I love the 1200 and the mileage it get's. Look for a 87 1200-A with cruise and you'll be set.
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thanks for your comments... I like the bike that I have, but after few medium range rides, my right hand become a pain on my B%TT ... I have plans to go in a 1,000 / 1,500 miles each way travel very soon up to Oregon, so holding the throttle with my hand is not an option..... The instrument cluster project..... yeaah is just for fun...

Today I got installed the new windshield, new lamp bulbs and turn signal control assembly. Just need to replace the front rim because is a little wobbling at < 30 mhp when 1 hand is off the handlebar.

Check the steering head bearing and torque, that and tire pressure.
