1986 Aspencade rear axle nut

Postby bigtg67 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 7:45 pm

Does the axle nut on an '86 Aspencade turn counter clockwise to loosen or is it reverse threaded.
I'm having trouble getting it to break loose going ccw. Actually the part of the axle is spinning on the left side, the pinch bolt is torqued. The torque on the axle nut is supposed to be 69 ft. lbs. but can't get it to break loose. Any ideas?

Yes the threaded nut will have to turn ccw to loosen. There should be a hole through the axle head on the other side of the nut, stick a screw driver in there and a wrench on the nut side and unscrew the thread. The wrench on the nut may need to be smacked with a hammer to help loosen the nut.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

Thanks for the info keithg64!
The hole was actually covered by the "pinch" part of the swing arm (weird). I did see that the axle had 2 flat sides on the left, so with my sons help and a wrench on the left and socket on the right- we got it to break loose. New tire is on and bike is back together!
