carbs running lean

Postby dodge » Fri Aug 26, 2011 5:13 pm

Could use some help. I have a 1984 1200I wing. I have rebuilt carbs except for idle jets and synced. The plugs appear to indicate the bike is running lean. Another indication of leaness is while running at lower RPMs bike seems to be struggling. If I engage the choke it smooths out and runs better, especially at lower RPMs. When you get into the throttle it pulls hard and seems to be okay. Also the idle seems to change from ride to ride. Is there a way to richen the carbs at lower RPMs? CV slides rebuilt etc. I just put carbs back on after checking float heights etc. No blockage on jets but I did find one float out of adjustment. Set all floats according to shop manual. The engine at those lower constant RPMs feels like it is shuddering or quivering. More of a feel than sound.

Are all the vacuum hoses under the air box in good shape? Pull the vacuum hose off the number 4 carb intake runner and plug it, See if it makes any difference.

Sorry I haven't been back sooner. I had compny. Checked all vacuum hoses last week when I found float height off. Pulled vac hose and idled rougher, really not much change.
I ran a couple of hundred miles this weekend with a new set of plugs and read them afterwards. They looked like they just came out of the box. I can't for the life of me understand how the bike got so lean all of a sudden. I have ordered new jets and needle seats along with new idle jets. Looks like they are coming off again.

Let Me know if You have any success after changing out the parts, I,m curious as to the problem to. I do not know if theres a such thing as a weak fuel pump, When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? I had the opposite problem running to rich, The Wingman ( adm.) pointed Me in the right direction, It was misadjusted floats. Take care & good luck

Thanks for the advice. I changed fuel pump and filter today before I rode it to work. No change. I would like to know more about the float fix. If you can lean out the carbs with float a adjustment why couldn't you richen them as well? Any carb experts out there?
