speedometer not working on 84 aspen

Postby ptuner » Mon Aug 29, 2011 12:26 pm

84 aspen. elect/mech speedometer.
i removed the black cover to the sensor on the right side front wheel. there is a round magnet (looking) connected on a small shaft to the front wheel housing. Does this round magnet revolve and then sensed by the sensor in the black cover? if so, my problem is the shaft the magnet is attached to is stuck tight and does not revolve.
There is only one phillips screw holding this magnet shaft and housing. Assuming this is the problem, how does this unit detach? I'm at a lost on what to do next. thanks for any help.

Can't help much, but yes the magnet does have to turn with the wheel and the sensor stays stationary.

Thanks for confirming that. Next question is how do I remove the 'gear hub" that spins the magnet? Assuming the gearing is damaged, is this part available?
thanks. what a great forum !

I've not had the opportunity to lay hands on one,but if is was assembled, there must be a way to disassemble it. How much more vague can I get? :D

I figure that if it's going in the trash can anyway,I'll tear it apart somehow just to see.I've got plenty of JB Weld and silicone.

With the front tire off the ground, when you spin the wheel the round piece with the magnets should turn. If it does not then you have a problem with the speedometer drive that the speed sensor housing is connected to. The phillips screw that holds the speed sensor to the speedometer housing should be removed then you can seperate the 2 pieces and then you can put a screwdriver blade in and turn the drive to the speed sensor to verify that the problem is in the speedsensor or with the speedometer drive.
