86 GL1200i just cuts off.

Postby tjack64 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 8:22 pm

Hi all. I am new to the Goldwing family. Been wanting one for about 20 years and finally got it. My problem is the when I ride the bike (long enough to get to operating temp) then stop anywhere for a short period and get going again the bike will just loose fire and die. The lights on the dash are still on so it is not loosing all the current, does this up to 6 times before something cools down???, then runs fine again. Can ride bike for hours with no problem unless I stop for 10 or 15 minutes, then she just dies, everyonce in a while it might hiccup and give me a warning, but most times no just dies flat out, it has always started right back up after 30 secs or so. Have not seen anything in the archives yet but I'll keep looking. Any suggestions? I can throw a pile of parts at it but funds are low. :(

Thanks Jim

When you've stopped and it's warm, will it crank? Or does it crank and start, and then die immediately?

It will always turn over but does not fire. Sometimes it fires right back up and go 100 yards. other times it will turn over but not start, after it does start and get moving and whatever component cools it is fine. It always has power to the dash, lights radio, everywhere but at the plugs i guess. Kind of hard to get a meter in there and test something so sporatic. Sometimes it does start right back up for a second then dies, other times it will go a short distance.

Thanks Jim

Or coils. Also could be battery - when it does start, is it running rough until it gets moving? Or more specifically - does it run rough at idle, but smooths up when you get the revs up?

Idles smooth when it starts back up. If I get on the side roads and put up with it a few times its fine, until the next time I stop for more than a few minutes. Always runs fine until it just up and cuts off. :?

Thanks Jim

I had a 1970 Beetle that did the same thing. I discovered it was vapor lock in the fuel pump. It would run just fine till I stopped with it hot and go in a store or buy gas, then it would start and die right away. I guess once the fuel in the carb got used there was no more and it died. I used to carry a can of soda around and when it happened I would pour the soda over the fuel pump and it would work just fine and I could be on my way.

I ended up doing a rebuild on the engine and found the crankcase had a casting flaw which caused the #3 main bearing to overheat. That in turn overheated the engine and caused the vapor lock. I got snookered by the PO on that one allright.

If it was the coil I don't think it would start up and idle when hot. I'm thinking it's the fuel pump. Do you have a fuel filter after the pump that you can see if there is fuel in there when it won't run? You could do the same test like I did and carry some water along and try to pour it over the fuel pump. It's right out there on the right side. If you cool off the pump and it works then that teslls you it is vapor lock. Why it the fuel pump is getting too hot I don't know. Perhaps it is just bad, and when it gets hot it can't pump?

Thanks for all the suggestions. After reading some archive posts here and on other forums looks like the main concensus is pulse generators. Got a friend that works at a Honda dealership that can get Me parts at his discount. They are about 65 bucks, so I think I'll try them first. I'll get back as soon as I get them on and it dries up enough to test the Wing out.

The only real way of testing those things is to replace them.
I have had them read correctly with an ohm meter and when replaced it solved the missing and back firing problem.

One thing, if replacing them doesnt fix the problem you will have a spare set for when they DO go :)
