My 1985 goldwing interstate 1200 will start and run well for 10-15 minutes before shutting itself off. If I try to start immediately after, bike backfires but won't start. Needs to sit 30 min. before restarting. This bike sat in a garage unridden for 2 years prior to my purchasing it. Runs smooth when it runs! I can work on about any machine but am new to working on motorcycles. Would appreciate any help.

First welcome old goat if your bike was setting for two years here are a few things you should check. 1 gas tank for rust or varnish 2 fuel filter 3 timing belts 4 oil and all fluids replace them all . You can also try running sea foam in your gas to help clean your carbs These are just a few things I would start with. Oh and belts,belts if you dont know when they were changed then change them. I would agree. Sounds like the pulse generator has failed or is failing. It would be like a module on a can. When it gets hot it starts to break down and you lose your timing and or spark.

You also might want to check that you haven't got a clogged fuel tank cap that is developing a vacuum. If the bike quits, and you open the fuel tank (accompanied by a whoosh of air), and the bike starts right up after that, then that's your problem.
