pulse generator

Postby porsche monkey » Fri Sep 09, 2011 11:47 am

Well I got stranded on the way to work this morning. Went back a few hours later and she fired right up and I rode her the rest of the way in. I believe its the pulse generator and will ohm it out this evening. Are new pulse generators available or is my only bet used parts?

If it's fuel injected,it's more likely the crank angle sensor by the timing belt(just one of them). It's a slim chance that both ignition pulse coils (2 of them)would fail at the same time.It may OHM out OK when cold and fail when hot.

It's an 85 Aspy, carburated. Yeah I'm kinda thinking it will test okay cold too. I can run it till its hot then test again.

You can also speed up the testing by gently heating the pulse generators with a hair dryer or heat gun while the bike is running or before you start the bike. To run the test the timing belt cover must be removed.

It's a coil of wire with a center metal core and a magnet. When the magnetic field is interrupted by the rotating cam,the field collapses and generates a voltage spike. The spike is amplified to a level(about 400 volts)and then dumped into the coil.

In other words , it's the thingy on the motor that gets the spark started. :D
