1987 GL1200A Cooling fan question.

Postby Redviking81 » Sun Sep 18, 2011 12:52 am

Hello all,
I recently got my first Goldwing and am loving it! I have a question about the cooling fan. I've not yet noticed it engaging yet and during idleing (adjusting headlight and such) I've had it up to 5 bars on the temperature guage, should the fan be kicking on at this point or does it need to go way up before it should kick in. I'm leary of letting it idle further and letting the temp get too high, certainly don't want to damage my engine or warp anything.

I've gained so much knowledge about my bike from this site and all of your wonderful postings. Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

Thanks!

I,ve owned two Gl,s first a 95 1500a and 85 GL 1200a The 1500 seemed to activate the fans faster on idle than the 1200, Seems the 1200 runs cooler, I would say twice as long for the 1200 to come on versus the 1500, But to on the safe side leave it run a little longer to see if it comes on, If not check the thermal switch or fan.

Normally the fan will come on when reaching 7-8 bars.
