86 gl1200a changing fairing reflectors to lights

Postby bmays71 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 9:49 am

I have an 86 gl1200a aspencade and I want to change the fairing reflectors to lights. Can anyone tell me the correct way to do this. Thanks.

One of the users here is changing out her 1100 reflectors to LED lights using these lights, and they apparently fit perfectly. They have amber versions as well. I'm waiting to see how they work for her, and if it turns out well, I'm going to do mine this winter as well.

Thats great hope everything works out for the both of you. I already have my lights, I ordered them just need to know if there's a certain way to take the reflectors out and put the new lights in, and do I need to wire them in or is there a plug alredy there to plug them into. Thanks.

When I took my reflectors apart last year to investigate this, I found that they just popped off and came apart as soon as you undid the acorn nut on the inside. You'll have to drill a hole to accommodate the wires, as well as run the wires and find a good place to plug them in (i.e. tail running light circuit).

I'll post up a bunch of pics this weekend of the saddle bag lights if I have time.

I think Drag Specialties has a direct fit for the 1200s (rectangular), I used the amber pair for the lower fairing skirts on my 1100. they are not a direct fit for the 1100 reflectors (square). Beware; the faces pop off easily and you will loose them on the highway if you don't put a dab of silicone to hold them in place.

Sorry about the photo size, I'm at work so I can't edit. The upper reflector is stock, the lower is the Drag Specialities part with a running light in it.

Thanks for the info I'll remember that when I change mine out. I'd like to see the ones on the saddle bags to because I'm going to change the reflectors on mine to lights also.

I had thought you were going to remove the black base of the aftermarket light and mount the new lens with LED's directly on the original black base. Would it fit that way?

No, the 6 LEDs are a sealed unit in clear epoxy that makes the housing, lights and stud all one piece. Only the lense comes off. So, I kept the OEM base to keep the unit pointed "square" since the saddlebag is tapered in that area. The base also hides the extra hole needed to thread the wires through.

The bonus is that everything is reversable if you want to either go back to stock or do something else. It's all behind the base.

My original plan was to drill out some of the OEM base and install my own LEDs under the factory lens, but I realized that there was no way I was going to be able to separate the lens from its base without destroying it. I tried drilling some holes from behind, but even with a drill press, it was only a matter of time before I accidentally cracked the lens, and then I'd be well and truly screwed. :)

I posted two new pics over here http://www.goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=734 You can see the front (lower) lights well, but I haven't gotten around to wiring up the rear bag lights yet. We went for a ride yesterday instead..
