radiator fan won't run

Postby dostbye » Wed Oct 05, 2011 2:55 pm

Help! My husband just bought an '87 Aspencade. He is finding all kinds of little problems with it. Right now he is working on the radiator fan. It won't kick on. Doesn't seem to be enough amps getting to it. Any help would be appreciated. The other problem, the pre-sets on the radio work but can't change channels. Anyone know about this? Thanks. Frustrated wife! :D

Fuse #8 is the power source for the fan,it is turned on by a thermal switch with 2 wires on in.It's mounted at the front of the engine, right where the upper radiator hose hooks on.There is also a 1 wire part there,it's the temperature sending unit for the gauge.
If you turn on the key and short the 2 wires together, the fan should fire up.

Thanks. He says he tried that and it didn't work. He has bi-passed the whole works and hooked up to a hot wire and now it works. Any help on the radio?

Either the button contacts are contaminated or the 87 model radio needs a repair shop. There is a recommended repair facility by the Admin,I think it's Sierra Electronics ???

Bypassing the original wiring is OK as long as it's fuse protected 10 amp. Please insist that a fuse be in the circuit.Don't take a chance that the fan quits and smokes the wiring.

Thanks again. He said he has a wire hooked to a 10 AMP fuse and has hooked up a on/off toggle switch until he can get the new part. Thanks for the in put on the radio. A friend showed him how to run the radio today.
