1985 1200GL Clarification fuel inj petcock

Postby greatketch » Thu Oct 20, 2011 6:09 am

Hello Folks,

I recently acquired a 1985 1200GL non limited edition.

Several other bikers have debated, without looking at my bike, that I have fuel injection because I have no reserve on the petcock. Their thought is that fuel injection bikes do not have a reserve switch.

The debate of fuel injection arose when I told them a story how I thought I ran out of gas and that I merely needed to add about 2.5 - 3 gallons to get back running -- I had thought it odd to run out of gas without a fuel light warning, and the needle still about quarter tank. They asked me why didn't I switch to reserve? My response was I have no switch setting, the petcock is on or off.

I suspect I have a 5.? gallon tank, but not sure. Is it possible that smaller tanks were made on some of the older GLs? I will drain the tank and refill to test

What are your thoughts on the matter of non fuel injection without a reserve setting?

Thank you

One way for me to know for sure is to

I have always had the GL1200-A. But as far as the fuel tank goes they both have the same size tank. 5.8gal. No reserve just on or off. The Aspy has a low fuel warning light that comes on with about 1 gal left in the tank. I don't know if the Interstate had a warning light. After a few fill ups you should be able to tell from the fuel gauge when you are getting low and need fuel. I also use my trip meter to keep track of when to fuel up. Hope this helps. Only the 85 Limited had fuel injection. We have carbs.....
Enjoy the ride. They are all good, just some better than others.

Thank you for your response.

I researched today. The Goldwing is Carbs, with no reserve petcock, and if the warning light did not come on then it is something else that caused the bike to stall and sputter and give the impression that it ran out of gas.

I should change the filters.

Thank you
