bike wont run

Postby justin7856 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 2:01 pm

I have a 85 aspencade it only has 48000 miles on it. I got a couple months ago and have been working on it trying to get it to run. I have replaced ingtion unit, fuel pump,regultor/rectifer,spark plugs and wires, and both the coils.I have also took the carbs off and cleaned them. Checked the timing and the belt. The bike is getting spark and fuel and i need some help cause i am at a lost. Any information would be great. thanks!!! sorry for the crappie grammer lol

Spark, fuel mixture, and compression, all in the right order and in a sufficient amount ,will fire a cylinder.
If it doesn't even try to fire, one of these is wrong.
Does it even try to run?
It really only takes gas, spark and compression to pop off.

It seems like it trying to start. When I try and start it it back fires out the carbs and the mufflers.

Good info.search the posts for the proper ignition wiring.I'll bet a dime that the coil wires /and/or ignition wires are wrong.I just remember that one coil goes to the front cylinders and the other goes to the rear.Trust me I've got them backwards more than once.

I agree. Something might be backwards. Try this pic to help trace things out. Did the previous owner do any work on the bike?

I think the schematic is for the gl1000.eg the points, although the wiring is the same. This is what I found for the 1200.Just another picture to look at.

He did say that he had spark.I only assume that it was from both coils. He also mentioned that it backfired in the carbs and exhaust. This is what leads me to incorrect firing order. It could be as simple as the 2 wires reversed on the coils?

It certainly could be wires crossed.

One also has to assume that having changed coils etc etc that the job has been done correctly, if this is the case and it still isn't running... see my post about pulse generators.

There are two pulse generators on the bike. If one went bad that can cause problems.

Just a long shot - but how fresh is the fuel? Was the bike sitting around for a long time?

Ok. I've look in the haynes manual and tested both pulse generators. On both i'm getting about 400 omhs, which is well below specs. I've taken them off now i'm in search for a new set. Any ideas on where i might get them at a decent price??? Also thanks to all for the info provided.

I had to replace my pulse generators on 1985 GoldwingA. go to www.cmsnl.com they were the only place I could find a new set. I checked and they do list they do have them. With shipping it was around $135. It did fix mine.
