Removal of Rear Wheel 1986 SEi

Post by Digitalsaw » Wed Dec 23, 2009 5:06 pm

I downloaded the Honda Shop Manual for the 1200D and 1200A Goldwing and the extent of their instructions for removing the rear tire of my Wing was as follows:

1. Remove the left shock absorber lower mount bolt (easy to follow)
2. Remove the axle pinch bolt (piece of cake)
3. Raise the rear wheel with a block large enough that the axle clears the muffler (now we have a problem. They never said anything about bleeding the air out of the suspension and that obviously should happen because in order to get the axle that high I'm almost lifting the bike itself off the center stand)
4. Remove the axle and move the caliper assembly outward to allow removal of the rear wheel. (Houston...we have a problem. To begin with, how exactly do you 'remove' the axle? As well, what about the final drive on the other side of the bike? Are they assuming the person reading this will know how to do this stuff already?)
5. Remove the rear wheel (oh, if only it was that easy).
I read the wonderful DIY from Wingadmin about removing the rear wheel on an older wing and am just curious if this is that much different? Does anyone have any ideas? Otherwise, I will figure it out myself. Just seemed they were skipping some very important steps. Am I wrong?
Thanks guys.

I'm pretty sure that apart from a couple differences in spacers and so on, removing the rear wheel on the 1100 is the same as on the 1200.
